Have you ever wondered how the Egyptians get that juicy feel to their movements? How is beledi so grounded? How can a dancer be so expressive when dancing from the heart? How can the shimmy be controlled and layered on top of any move? Tamalyn has a system that consists of concepts collected throughout her travels and over her 42-year career of teaching. This class, when taken prior to her other workshops, helps enhance your experience and understanding of her concepts and her work. This is not a lecture—be prepared to dance!

Empires and Trade Routes That Influenced Egyptian Dance

Egypt is not a country that exists in isolation from the rest of the world. It is at the heart of many trade routes, cultural influences and empires that brought different ideas to the people, the music and the dance. This workshop explores the influences that have helped form our dance. It will help you feel the vastness of Oriental dance/ Beledi, long before it was on stage or in night clubs. We will be exploring these concepts through dance. This is not a lecture—be prepared to dance!

From the “Radio Age” to film, video, and the internet, we will explore how Egyptian music and films inspired the world, and how the media propelled this phenomenon to what it is today…a global industry. We will use dance to travel through the last 80 years of history! This is not a lecture—be prepared to dance!
